tips to reduce holiday stress

With Christmas right around the corner if you haven’t done your shopping by now, you’re probably going to pull your hair out. And with all the family and friends in food, it’s easy to let your holiday gut balloon out of control.  Well, in this post today I’m going to show you how to keep the stress down while keeping your waistline down at the same time.

As I’m sure you know by now stress releases one of the worst hormones to your body in terms of burning fat and building muscle. This hormone is called cortisol. While it has his uses, this can wreak havoc on your abs.

So in honor of the 12 days of Christmas, I’m going to give you 12 ways to keep your stress levels down so you can keep (or get your) sexiness intact.  I’ll be starting with six things to do, then six things to take.

1. Get a workout in

You can review my post on my four-minute mayhem workout for quick workouts you can do anywhere, anytime. This little workout  will give you all you need to release serotonin levels into your bloodstream which counteract cortisol.

2. Go for a jog

For many people jogging is very relaxing (I’m not one of them). But if this is you, you’ll definitely need to do something that’s relaxing. If it’s too cold outside, which I haven’t seen stop many people up here,  you can go to the gym and hit the treadmill or elliptical.

3. Take a boxing class

If your boss at work really stressed you out and you really need something to hit, having a boxing class to go to after work is going to really help you. One of my favorite things to do was to spar when I Tae Kwon Do because it was such a great stress reliever.

4. Switch to full body exercises

If you’re used to doing split body workouts or you never do weights, give your body a change and do full body weight training workouts. These workouts fatigue more muscles, release more hormones, and burn more calories.

5. Anti-activity

Slow down! With all the high-speed is associated with the holidays you need to slow down. This can range from getting a full night’s rest, to get a massage gift card to your favorite massage parlor, for Christmas.  Guys, I’m sure your ladies will love this.  Which may lead to…

6. Sex (lol)

Nature’s natural remedy to de-stress. I don’t think I have to say too much about this.

7. Vitamin C

vitamin C is your body’s natural cell defense against stress. Because more stress burns up more vitamin C, you need to increase your vitamin C intake during this time of year. It’s recommended to take at least 500 mg per day.

8. Vitamin B

Vitamin B gives you a  calm energy and aids in hormone production. You need to get a vitamin B complex that includes B6, B3, and B12. You can see this article for more vitamin information.

9. Eat a meat, veggies, and fat breakfast

This isn’t the usual bacon, eggs, and toast breakfast, but not having carbs in you breakfast is going to regulate your hormones released throughout the day and give you a better mood. You won’t get an insulin spike that makes you crash around the afternoon when you need that Coffee.

10. Cut the coffee

Speaking of coffee, the last thing you want to do when you stressed is to simulate your adrenal glands which release more cortisol. You need to slow down. So it makes sense that cutting those cups of coffee is going to help you.

11. Chocolate

I knew you were waiting for this one. Coffee releases feel-good hormones into your bloodstream and also has antioxidant benefits. Go with 70% cocoa, that is dark chocolate, and only eat small amounts.

12. Antioxidant foods

Dark foods such as greens, kale, blueberries, blackberries, and strawberries, all have high antioxidant levels. These antioxidants fight free radicals that attack yourselves when you stressed.  Here’s a better list of antioxidant foods.
